From Data to Impact: How Voluntary Local Reviews & SDG Localization Drive Development in Cities
12 May 2025
The world faces a convergence of crises, with widening inequalities, climate change, and conflict-driven displacement hindering SDG progress. In the Arab region, rapid urbanization has amplified socio-economic disparities, with millions lacking basic services and facing climate-related risks. As key drivers of change, cities play a pivotal role in achieving sustainable development, with 65% of SDG targets linked to local governance. Data-driven decision-making is crucial, yet subnational data gaps pose significant challenges. Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs) have emerged as transformative tools for tracking progress and fostering collaboration. Since the first Arab-region VLR in 2022, peer-exchanges have strengthened local capacities, but data accessibility remains a major hurdle. AECD offers city leaders a vital platform to share solutions for bridging data gaps, leveraging VLRs, and implementing evidence-based urban strategies. This dialogue fosters cooperation between Arab and European cities, advancing inclusive, sustainable development and enhancing urban resilience.
